Hey, Felix, Looks like to me you may need to give up the idea of finding a FT job but perhaps need to work in freelance on project based jobs. That's a way of living, though not secured. To look at it another way, if you go to Canada just to get a FT job like you did in HK, why not stay in HK for the FT job!!!

I don't have a choice. Before I have a FT job, I need $ to pay some bills. It's true that my savings can help. But I don't like the feeling of seeing my bank a/c in red. Maybe I should see my current life in Toronto as a Long Vacation. 明天會更好！
Being a focus group moderator is interesting and intellectually challenging. Pay is not bad too. So keep the door open. You may find yourself doing more and more of these work. Though it may not match exactly your dream before, it may not be a bad thing at all. Just open your hearts and mind and enjoy this uncommon experience!
